Research Training Group 1493
“Mathematical Structures in Modern Quantum Physics”

  • Research Training Group

The Research Training Group “Mathematical Structures in Modern Quantum Physics” investigates mathematical structures that arise in quantum physics and their applications in quantum field theory. This includes the study of purely mathematical questions regarding these structures, in areas such as noncommutative geometry, analysis and representation theory, topology and algebraic geometry.

Students with a background in pure mathematics or mathematical physics will receive a broad education enabling them to successfully pursue research on problems at the interface between mathematics and quantum physics. In lecture courses taught jointly by a mathematician and a physicist they will learn about central ideas in mathematical physics, including conceptual and constructive aspects of quantum field theory and specific issues in string theory.

Their research will be guided and monitored by interdisciplinary thesis committees under the roof of the Georg-August University School of Science (GAUSS), which ensures structured doctoral study programmes in all mathematics and natural science faculties in Göttingen.

During the training program of the RTG, particularly for the organization of workshops and conferences, we'll closely collaborate with the thematically and geographically adjacent Research Training Group “Analysis, Geometry and String Theory” of the Leibniz Universität Hannover.

Our Research Training Group is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) and will run from 1.4.2008 till 30.9.2012, with a possible extension by further 4½ years. Altogether, we offer 14 stipends for doctoral students and 2 postdoc positions.

Speaker of the Research Training Group is Prof. Dr. Ralf Meyer.

Currently, several doctoral stipends are open for applications.
