Göttingen Conference on Coarse Geometry 2006, October 17th - 19th

What is Coarse Geometry? And what is this Conference?

Coarse Geometry deals with the large-scale structures of geometric objects, like the asymptotic behaviour of metric spaces or groups. E.g., for a coarse geometer, the real numbers and the integers are similar (coarsely equivalent), whereas their topological structures are quite different. It is possible to abstract these structures and fit them into an axiomatic ansatz, which again allows to define cohomology theories and more general notions of dimension.

This conference is meant as an appendix to the "Young Topologists and new topology 2006" conference. It will take place at the Mathematisches Institut of the Georg-August-University in Göttingen.

The GCCG is supported by the Graduiertenkolleg "Gruppen und Geometrie" of the Mathematical Institute in Göttingen.

    Format and Schedule

Each talk will consist of two parts: A short overview of half an hour, and a second one that lasts one hour and may go into details, these two parts being separated by a break. After the second part there will be lots of time for questions, remarks and detailed discussions.

The first part of the talk should be understandable without further knowledge of coarse geometry, the use of motivations and examples is encouraged. The second part may be deeper, faster and more detailed.
