Abstract: M. Hirokado and S. Schröer gave examples of Calabi-Yau manifolds in
characteristic 2 and 3 that do not admit lifting to characteristic zero.
In the talk I will describe nonliftable double octic Calabi-Yau manifolds in
characteristic 3 and 5. The construction is based on existence of octic
arrangements in positive characteristic that do not exist in characteristic
zero. This is joint work with C. Meyer and D. van Straten (Mainz).
