Special session:
Dirac operators in Geometry and Topology

Organizers:         Paolo Piazza     and     Thomas Schick

Description:

Dirac type operators play an important role at the interface between geometry and topology. In many situations, they provide, via analysis, an important link between these areas, e.g. when index theorems are used to force the existence of harmonic spinors which in turn obstructs via existence of a metric of positive scalar curvature. Dirac operators are used to describe and analyze K-theory, one of the most important generalized homology theories. They also play a prominent role in the work around isomorphism conjectures, another driving force of recent developments in geometry and topology and beyond. They show up as one of the crucial ingredients in non-commutative geometries, with many applications to modern mathematical physics. The special section is devoted to all aspects of this work, and to related topics.

Partial financial support for this special seesion has been provided by "Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica Francesco Severi", through the GNSAGA, and by "Ministero Ricerca Scientifica" through the project "Spazi di moduli e teorie di Lie".
